Smoke Does Not Stay Where the Fire Is

Being nowhere near open brush land does not exempt a Westside Los Angeles home from what wildfire season does to indoor air, because the entire Los Angeles basin shares the same air whenever the wind is blowing the wrong way. A fire burning many miles off can still send smoke drifting over Santa Monica, Culver City, Venice, and every neighborhood in between, and once that smoke reaches a house, it finds its way in through every gap in the building envelope, door and window seams, vent openings, even the electrical outlets cut into an exterior wall. Knowing exactly what an HVAC system can and cannot do about that gap is what separates a household with a real plan from one relying on closed windows and hoping for the best.

Closed Windows Help, But Less Than You Would Expect

Plenty of Westside Los Angeles homeowners assume that shutting the windows during a smoke event is enough protection on its own. It helps, but a house is not sealed the way a submarine is. Older double hung windows and the original wood frames common in Craftsman bungalows across Santa Monica and Venice were built for a different priority entirely, catching an ocean breeze, and those same gaps that let a breeze through also let smoke particles in, particles small enough to move through openings you cannot see with your eyes. Even newer, tighter construction in Culver City still exchanges some air with the outside through ordinary building leakage that nobody notices on a normal day.

What Your Filter Is Actually Rated to Catch

The MERV scale is what tells you how well a given filter captures particles across a range of sizes, and it is worth knowing where your current filter sits on it. Most residential systems ship with something on the low end of that scale, adequate for the dust and larger household debris the equipment itself needs kept out, but not built with wildfire smoke's fine particulate load in mind. A MERV 13 filter closes much of that gap, catching a meaningfully greater share of the small particles smoke carries, though getting there is not simply a matter of buying a denser filter and swapping it in. Denser media resists airflow more than a thinner filter does, and a blower motor sized around a lighter filter can struggle against that added resistance, which shows up as reduced airflow and, in some cases, the same icing problem a filthy, clogged filter would cause.

Confirming Your System Can Handle the Upgrade

We do not recommend a MERV 13 filter blind. Checking your system's static pressure first tells us whether the blower can actually push air through the added resistance without strain, and in a fair number of older Culver City and Mar Vista homes, the honest answer is not yet, at least not without a larger filter grille or some work on the return duct first. Sorting that out on a quiet week in spring is a very different experience than discovering it the hard way once smoke has already settled in and every HVAC crew on the Westside has a full calendar.

Running the System on Continuous Fan

Most homes on the Westside do not have a dedicated outside air intake built into their HVAC system, which means the system only filters air when it is actively running a heating or cooling cycle. Switching the fan setting to run continuously during a smoke event, rather than only cycling with the thermostat, pushes more indoor air through your filter more often, which matters because smoke does not wait for your thermostat to call for cooling before it works its way indoors.

Sealing Gaps Before the Season Starts

Your HVAC system is only one line of defense. Closing off the obvious gaps around doors and windows keeps a meaningful amount of smoke from getting inside at all, which means less work for the filter that catches whatever does make it through. Older Santa Monica bungalows and Craftsman homes still running their original wood window frames have more of these gaps to deal with than newer Culver City construction built with tighter, modern weatherstripping, though no house is completely sealed. Walking your door sweeps and window seals during a quiet stretch of the calendar, rather than scrambling once smoke has already rolled in and every hardware store shelf and HVAC appointment book is picked clean, is the difference between a plan and a scramble.

Portable Purifiers Fill the Gaps Your System Cannot Reach

There is a gap even a perfectly upgraded central filter cannot close on its own, since it only cleans air while the system is actually moving air, whether that is an active heating or cooling cycle or the fan deliberately left running. A genuine HEPA unit sitting in a bedroom or a main living area does not care what the thermostat is doing one way or the other, it just keeps filtering, which is exactly what covers you overnight, when a system left on its normal schedule may sit idle for hours at a stretch. Treat that standalone unit as coverage for the gaps your central system leaves open, not as a substitute for having the central filtration sorted out in the first place.

Watch What Your Exhaust Fans Are Doing

Every exhaust fan in the house, the one over the stove, the ones in each bathroom, the dryer vent, is constantly moving air out, and your home has to pull replacement air in from somewhere to balance that. Run those fans more than you strictly need to during a smoke event and you create a slight negative pressure that draws additional outside air, smoke included, through every crack and seam faster than it would otherwise arrive, undoing some of the benefit from whatever filtration and sealing steps you have already taken. Simply being a bit more sparing with exhaust fan use while conditions are bad costs nothing and reinforces everything else on this list rather than competing with it.

Trust the Air Quality Reading, Not the View From Your Window

Your own eyes are a poor instrument for judging how bad conditions actually are. A hazy sky is an obvious cue, but plenty of unhealthy air moves through a neighborhood in Santa Monica or Culver City without ever looking dramatic from a window, especially on a day with enough wind to disperse the visible haze while the fine particulate count stays elevated. Public air quality index readings, published in something close to real time by regional monitoring agencies, give you a number to check instead of a guess. Pairing that with an inexpensive indoor monitor sitting in your main living area tells you something more specific still, whether the filtration and sealing steps you have already taken are actually holding indoor levels down, or whether the smoke is finding its way in regardless. Once an outdoor reading crosses into unhealthy territory, treat that as the signal to switch the fan to continuous and ease off on exhaust fan use, whether or not the sky outside looks like anything is wrong that particular afternoon.

Ductless Systems Need a Different Plan

A room cooled by a ductless mini split rather than central ductwork needs a different answer here, since the whole MERV upgrade conversation above does not really apply to it. The washable mesh screen built into a typical ductless indoor unit is meant to stop dust and larger household particles, and it was never engineered to do anything meaningful against the kind of fine particulate that travels in wildfire smoke. Once conditions turn smoky, that indoor unit will keep the room at temperature without doing much of anything to clean the air passing through it, which is exactly why a portable purifier belongs in that room specifically, filling in for equipment that structurally cannot take on a denser filter the way a central air handler can.

Preparing Before Smoke Is in the Forecast

Finding out mid-event that your blower cannot take a denser filter is about the worst possible timing, appointments are scarce, everyone else on the Westside had the same idea at once, and the air you are breathing in the meantime is already unhealthy. Getting the static pressure checked during a calm stretch, well ahead of when fire activity typically ramps up, puts whatever adjustment your system needs on your own timeline instead of an emergency one.

Building a Household Plan Before You Need One

The households that handle a smoke event most smoothly are usually the ones who worked out a plan before the smoke arrived, not during it. That plan is simple in outline: know whether your filter can be upgraded and whether it already has been, know how to switch your system to continuous fan, know where your portable purifiers are and whether their filters are still good, and know which exhaust fans to avoid running unnecessarily. None of these steps require special equipment beyond what most homes already have access to, they just require knowing the steps ahead of the week when smoke shows up in the forecast rather than figuring them out in the moment.

Talking to Household Members Who Are More Sensitive to Smoke
