HVAC Unit Cost on the Westside: Central Air or Ductless

If you are looking up hvac unit cost for a Westside house, the number on the box is not the number you pay. The bill is the unit plus the labor, the ducts or the line set, the permit and the testing. Below are the installed figures Westside AirCon Services works from, and what pushes a job up or down. When you want your own number, request a written quote and we will price the house itself.

What an installed system runs

These are installed prices, so they include the work to put the system in, not just the equipment.

SystemInstalled price
Full central air install, Westside LAPriced after the walk-through
Single-zone ductless, one room$3,500 to $5,800
Multi-zone ductless, three to four roomsStart around $11,500 and climb

The central air price depends on system size, duct modifications, and equipment efficiency. The single-zone ductless range depends on BTU capacity and wall penetration. The multi-zone figure climbs with line-set length and how many indoor heads you need.

We do not print a price for the outdoor unit alone, because no one installs a unit alone. The quote lists the equipment model, the labor and the rest, so you see where every dollar goes before you agree to anything.

What moves your number

Two houses on the same street can quote apart. These are the reasons.

  • Size of the system. A bigger house or a sunny, poorly insulated one needs more capacity. We size it with a load calculation, not by eye.
  • Ductwork. Reusing sound ducts costs less than sealing tired ones or running new ones. Some houses have no ducts at all.
  • Efficiency. A higher efficiency rating costs more up front. The SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings on the quote let you compare models fairly.
  • Access. An air handler in a tight attic or a crawl space under the house takes longer than one in an open closet.
  • Electrical. A heat pump or a larger air handler may call for a panel check, and a panel upgrade is added work.
  • Refrigerant. New residential split systems are made with lower-GWP A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. The quote names which one your equipment uses.

How the house changes the answer

The Westside's mix of homes means the cheapest option is not always the same option.

A bungalow in Mar Vista or Palms built before central air was standard may have no ductwork. Running new ducts means opening walls and ceilings, and that labor can outweigh the equipment. A ductless mini split skips it. It needs one small wall penetration and a line set to the outdoor unit, and each indoor head runs on its own control.

A house that already has sound forced-air ducts is the opposite case. Central air reuses what is there, so the money goes into the unit, the sizing and the sealing.

In a Culver City condo or a West LA apartment building, the price can include a step that has nothing to do with equipment. The property manager or HOA often has to approve where the condenser goes, and we plan the install around that rule before the equipment is ordered.

Rooms added later, such as a converted garage or a detached studio, can be a ductless job, because the original system was never sized for them. We look at what the house has before we say which way to go. For a full replacement, our AC installation page lays out how a job runs from walk-through to startup test.

What sits outside the unit price

California treats an AC or ductwork replacement as permitted work. In City of Los Angeles neighborhoods that means LADBS, and in Santa Monica it is the city's own building and safety division. On a change-out or duct work, Title 24 can require duct sealing and a leakage test by a third-party HERS rater, depending on the scope. We list the permit and the testing in the quote, so they are not a surprise after the equipment arrives.

Questions about pricing

Can you give me an exact price over the phone?

No. The house sets the number, so we walk it first, then write the quote before work starts. A phone number would be a guess, and you would end up comparing guesses.

Is the cheapest unit the cheapest job?

Not always. A low-cost unit on a house with failing ducts can cost more once the duct work is added. Compare the full written scope, not the equipment line.

Does the quote cover a condo with HOA rules?

The quote covers the install and we coordinate the HOA or property manager approval. Where they want the condenser screened or placed differently, we plan around it.

How do I start?

Use the request form on this page with your house type and the rooms you want cooled. The office calls you back with a visit time, and the walk-through is where your number gets built.
